Calories – Everything You Need To Know

People are talking about calories all the time. But when people talk about the calories in food, what do they mean exactly? A lot of us take for granted on what a calorie is. On the most basic level a calorie is a unit of measurement (like a liter of water), but it doesn’t measure weight or length, instead if measures a unit of energy. When i say that the calories in a slice of pizza can be as high as 300 calories, what i mean is how much energy your body could get from eating it.

Most foods and drinks contain calories. Some foods, such as lettuce, contain few calories. There are even some foods known as negative calorie foods which have so little calories that it takes the body more energy to absorb it (here’s a list of negative calorie foods). Junk food on the other hand has a LOT of calories on top of which you get very little nutrition for the amount of calories you are consuming.

Your body needs only so many calories to function everyday, once you exceed that amount, the rest of that energy is stored as body fat. This is why a lot of us count calories.

Counting Calories
If you want to put a stop to putting on weight and are thinking about getting on a diet then you will need to learn how to count calories. Some make their potions smaller or change what they eat but calorie counting is the only way to get a rough idea on how many calories you are consuming everyday.

Calories and Losing Weight
The difference between weight loss and fat loss is that when you go on a diet to lose weight, the first few pounds you lose are water and muscles, its only later on that you lose any actual body fat. However through exercise you can maintain your health buy keeping/building muscle and losing fat. There are 3500 calories in a pound of fat, meaning that in order to lose 1 pound of body fat you need to have a deficit of 3500 calories.
